Computer "expertise"

I have been helping the library in Le Mars nickle and dime itself to death here lately. Most of it centers around the computer(s). I have enough knowledge to be really really dangerous. Today proved it. And I was mortified....embarrassed....and pretty depressed over the whole thing. Remember my problem with the linux system? It seems that I was not the only one who hates it. No one who uses our public computers likes the fact that we don't have Word on any of those computers. They are all stuck with open office... a linux open source software. Supposedly it's compatible to Word but first you have to figure the whole thing out. If you're dashing into the library to type off a document who wants to figure that our first? Anyway, I digress. Today I took 2 windows XP small business cds and proceeded to install them on all the public access computers. After figuring out that I had to turn off the Centurion Guard (I could install till the cows come home and as soon as I shut off the computer it goes right back to pre installation configuration because of that cool program.) what I thought was Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher onto the computer turned out to be something totally different on one of the computers. Not only did it not have those programs, but because Centurion Guard wasn't on, it wiped EVERYTHING CLEAN! No internet, no Centurion Guard, nothing. Nada. It was all gone. Wow! did I ever do a great job...or not. So, hat in hand, it was back to the tech guy. I think he loves me. Now he really knows how much I don't know. This is so humiliating. I have given him more business in the last week than the library did in a whole month before I got there. It took him two hours to fix what I did in less than 15 minutes. And it cost me $70 to get it done to boot. Good grief. I see my upgrade of the catlog system leaking out the doors at this rate. What a deal! Hopefully I will stop messing around with all the computers now. Leave well enough alone. Oh, and by the way, the other 4 computers that I used the other disc on loaded the small business components just fine. All the public computers now have the Word products on. Small triumph.

Rainy days and Thursdays

Today was the second morning full of rain. Pouring down. Yesterday I didn't go out for a walk because of it. "Sleeping in" was the order of yesterday's morning. Today, however, rain or no I had to go. It's almost like a compulsion. So I headed out to the Wellness Center and got my membership renewed. Then it was the eliptical machine and the treadmill. Wow! I even worked up a sweat! I didn't have to be to work until 11. This was only the second evening I've had to work. I'm still adjusting. Everything is an adjustment these days.

Sleeping In

It's raining it's pouring and this old gal is snoring. I hate missing my morning exercise. I should have gone up and got a monthly membership for the wellness center. You know, the treadmills, the weight machines, the eliptical machines all with TVs, lots of noise and people and bright lights. I can bring my ipod, ignore the tv and have at it. But it's pouring rain this morning and, gasp, I slept in. Oh, I was up at 5:30 like normal. Peered out the door and headed right back to the nice warm bed. Can you believe it? I got in an extra half hour of sleep. I even had a dream. Ron told me I was snoring. (Not! He was just getting back for all my making him roll over nights) So I should be extra refreshed and in great shape for the day.
OH! And did I tell you we got this extra warm beautiful new quilt? Well, thank you Linens and Things. That, I'm sure made the extra half hour even more comfy!

Pampered Chef

I got 3 paring knives for my birthday this year. Remember me telling you that I was getting a 'themed' present? Well, it was Pampered Chef. Seems someone wants me to make pecan tossis for Christmas this year. I'm not sure how the knives fit into that but I certainly did need them! Most of my knives are so nice and dull I can safely cut anything and not really cut anything. So this morning I decided it would be a great idea to try one out. Cut some cheese, bread and my thumb! I bled like a stuck pig. And you have to know that it still really hurts and is bleeding if I am still talking about it 12 hours later. Won't be able to use this dumb thumb for a few days. Watch out for new knives. Can you tell, too, this has been a slow news day.

A Day of Rest

I did get a nap in today. About 1/2 hour's worth. But the day was crammed fulled of all things church. Unreasonably, it can make me cranky. Two services, after church serving of a meal, a 4 o'clock meeting about the Christmas project, then the quarterly business meeting. I'm so glad this doesn't happen too often. I'm too much about just having the day to do what I WANT, not what's important for God's kingdom. One of the best sermons I've heard on the subject of a "day of rest" centered on how important it is for us to be restful in the sense that we aren't doing the things that we want and that are just about us, but rather its about those things we 'do' on this day that reflect our honor of God. I've spent 38 years of Sundays worrying about how I get enough time just for me. I've concentrated on Playing, or shopping, sleeping or eating ... whatever is best for me, rather than what promotes HIS kingdom. So, not that my nap is wrong, or even my desire to catch up on things I've ignored at home it's that I shouldn't resent the pull on my time from the Spirit's direction....
